Featured Science Images

In July, we sent out a call for science images, and we are now pleased to announce the winners.

Runner-up:

“Zebrafish Head Vasculature” by Ben Sempowski, B.S., Unit on Vascular Malformations

Fluorescent green microscopy image of zebrafish vasculature

Confocal microscopy imaging of a 5-day old zebrafish. This zebrafish has its veins and lymphatics labeled with green fluorescent protein (GFP), allowing easy visualization of critical vascular structures during development. In our lab, we use tools like this to examine the effects of pathogenic gene variants on the lymphatic structures such as the facial lymphatic, labeled here with a white arrow.

Winner

This image will be the featured image of the 19th Annual NICHD Fellows Retreat

“Nrx1 Expression in the Drosophila Larval Intestine” by Rosario Vicodomini, Ph.D., Section on Cellular Communication

Micrograph of drosophila larval intestine with cyan, magenta, and green stains. Certain portions are enlarged within circular insets.

Confocal micrograph of a third instar larval gut expressing UAS-CD4-tdTomato and UAS-GFP.nls under the control of Nrx-1-Gal4. The Nrx-1-Gal4 drives the expression of these reporters in specific subpopulations of cells. Nrx-1-Gal4 drives reporter expression in a subpopulation of enteroendocrine cells. In addition, Nrx-1-Gal4 drives expression in the visceral muscles. Scale bars: 1000 µm and 10 µm (insets).
